What Is Composite?

Composite resin is made of many different components which allow the material to start out as a sunny solution of putty like consistency. To harden the composite and set in place a UV light is used which allows the links and chains of which the composite is made to cross and become rigid. This is why composite is hard and can be placed successfully in the mouth to waistband chewing/biting forces.

This hardening process although very strong the surface of composite can allow for some permeability meaning over time the material can start to discolour which is not ideal.

Although technology has advanced significantly and now our curing devices create the tightest seal by crosslinking all of the chains the surfaces is still not 100% resistant to anything entering.

Dental composites, or resin-based composites, are synthetic materials that combine polymeric matrix with a dispersion of glass, mineral, or resin filler particles and short fibers by coupling agents.
